Upcoming Events

  • Look for us April 23 and 24

The Conservancy will have a table at the Scott Library Vendor Fair on Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We’ll have honey for sale, along with trail maps and brochures. On Sunday, April 24, we’ll be at the Mt. Lebanon Earth Day event with the same setup. We hope you’ll stop by and visit with us.

  • Cleanup Day April 16

It’s time to get Kane Woods ready for the busy season. There are two workdays planned this spring, and the first is Saturday, April 16 from 9a.m. to 3p.m. You can come for the whole day or only for an hour or two.  We’ll meet at the upper parking area at Whiskey Point. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear, including a hat and sturdy gloves a hat, and sunscreen and bug repellent if weather requires. Please bring tools such as loppers, pruners, rakes, etc. if you can. Bottled drinking water will be provided by the Conservancy. Thanks in advance! For more information, contact Kevin Russell,  knrusl@gmail.com.

  • Campfire on Dec. 28

Come to Whiskey Point on Tuesday, Dec. 28 for an end-of-year campfire. We’ll light it up at 6 p.m. Bring some food and drink to share as we talk about the past year, the coming year, and anything else that strikes our fancy.

  • Annual Meeting Nov. 17

All Conservancy members are encouraged to attend our annual meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 17. With COVID-19 still a concern locally, we will once again convene online via Zoom. Email us at ScottConservancy@Yahoo.com and we’ll send you the link.   We’re always happy to have members sit in on our monthly board meetings, but the annual meeting is especially important. We’ll take a look at our financial condition, highlight some of our projects from the past year, and elect board members.   If you have any questions about where the Conservancy is headed or what we have accomplished, this is a good time to have the conversation.   We hope that in the coming year we can return to in-person meetings. For now, enjoy the opportunity to connect with us without having to brave the cold weather.

We had planned to have our Annual Picnic on Wednesday, August 18, at Whiskey Point. Mother Nature had other plans. We have been RAINED OUT. Yeah, we’re bummed out too. Members should look for an email with more details about alternate plans. If you need more information or have questions, call Jane Sorcan at 412-276-5820 or email the Conservancy at ScottConservancy@Yahoo.com.

  • Campfires are back!

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to cancel our traditional winter campfire at the end of 2020. Now we’re bringing the campfire back on Wednesday, June 16 at 7 p.m. If you’ve never been to one of our campfires, this is a great time to try it out. We’ll gather at our shelter at Whiskey Point. Feel free to bring some food and drink. It’s a chance to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. We hope to see you there.

  • Earth Day 2021

Please join us in a virtual celebration of Earth Day beginning at noon on Tuesday, April 22. The event is being hosted by the Mt. Lebanon Environmental Team (LeboGreen) on its Facebook page: www.facebook.com/Earth-Day-in-Mt-Lebanon-135088833224133. There will be a Story Map divided into sustainability topic areas, with links to websites of participating organizations. There also will be a spot for videos and workshops.

  • Planning for 2021

Like everyone else, the Conservancy had to scale back our activities last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We did not have our summer picnic or our winter holiday luncheon, and our Ducky Race was changed to a drawing. As we get into the new year, we hope we will be able to resume at least some of our group activities. We’re starting to make plans. When we know for sure that it’s safe, we’ll announce events here on our website and in emails to our members.

Native Trees

The Scott Conservancy is partnering with Tree Pittsburgh by offering native species trees for sale at a very favorable cost. Tree Pittsburgh’s mission is to protect and restore Pittsburgh’s urban forest through community tree planting and care, education, and advocacy. Tree Pittsburgh’s Heritage Nursery seeks to revitalize local forests, and the important services they provide, by growing a diverse range of native and heritage trees for planting efforts. The trees available for sale have proved both hardy in our local climates and resilient in modern conditions. The nursery stock is curated with pride to withstand vegetative competition and thrive after planting, even in the toughest conditions. These trees have resisted weather extremes, soil changes, and pollution over decades, making them ideal candidates.

Scott Conservancy volunteers will be able to help with pickup, delivery, and planting of these reasonably priced trees. We hope you will consider planting a tree or two on your own property or on Conservancy property.
